Run Diary Week 6

Monday 7th May 2007

Martin was kindly offered accommodation last night, with Bill and Dolly Boyson of Bird city, having realised there were no motels. So today he continued on route 36, stopping at Atwood for a break and a visit to the library, where he was able to e-mail his latest batch of photos, including pictures of his hosts in Steamboat, Denver and Bird city. He finally stopped in Oberlin.

Tuesday 8th May 2007

 REACHED HALFWAY POINT TODAY!

A psychological boost, especially as the hardest part must surely be over. However, this part of Kansas is quite undulating- not exactly the dead flat plains that Martin had imagined. He mentioned the smoky hills being in this region. So Norton is the half way night stop. The weather was warming up a bit too. N.B this day also passes the 1500 mile point (which doesn’t include the extra miles in California)

Wednesday 9th May 2007

31 miles from Norton to Philipsburg covered today, although a few wasted miles were also run as Martin was going to go further onto Kensington until he discovered the motel there was closed, so he backtracked.

Thursday 10th May 2007

Philipsburg to Mankato, a sixty-mile day to make up for yesterday. Martin took a break about half way through at Smith Center and even managed to get a haircut at the end of today. This regularity of barbers’ visits is not shared by Steven or Michael, as they both have about six months overgrowth.

  Friday 11th May 2007

After a hard day yesterday it is a relief to have a shorter distance today, 31 miles from Mankato to Belleville. Temperatures are warming up at about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which does have implications for the feet but a bit of warmth is very welcome in other respects. Found a nice motel with air-conditioned room and laundry facilities.

Saturday 12th May 2007

Belleville to Marysville, 55 miles today. Another state is rapidly disappearing in the rear-view mirror. 2 more days and Martin should be o the border with Missouri on his birthday evening. He phoned us today from Washington, taking a break from the afternoon heat, but he still had 25 miles to go.

Sunday 13th May 2007

Martin phoned 4:30 pm his time and had already reached Seneca, his resting point for the day, as this was a 31-mile stretch. It was a relief to be out of the heat; 90 deg F with no shade was draining. Highlight of the day; one litre of Pepsi and a 32 oz coffee (what mixing of units) for $2.44. We’re assured he also consumes water sometimes, and generally 1 litre fluid every five miles.
