Run Diary Week 7
Monday 14th May 2007
Happy birthday Martin! We’ll put that birthday cake on hold for a month or so…
We had a call around 1 pm central time and were glad that Martin had started early again and was already at Hiawatha, after a 32 mile stretch. He was planning to look around the town and take it easy this afternoon. The hard shoulder of route 36 has been narrow and loads of cattle trucks have been hurtling past resulting in a strong and smelly gust of air! We have just noticed that on route 36 a place called Blair just before the border with Missouri, and a place called Cameron shortly after the border! Not likely to come across Campbell in the next few miles are we? Or Brown!
Tuesday 15th May 2007
Set off from Hiawatha and took the minor road parallel to route 36, which is increasingly busy via Troy and then through Blair to eventually cross over the Missouri river into St. Joseph, Missouri, this is state number 6, and should have pretty, rolling countryside to look forward to. St. Joseph is where the Pony express started travelling the 1900 miles to Sacramento, California. Jesse James was also shot here. 45 miles were covered today.
Wednesday 16th May 2007
A relatively shorter day today, 33 miles from Cameron was a safe bet for accommodation. The going felt tough because the hard shoulder has become very bumpy. Hopefully it won’t stay that way for the rest of route 36.
Thursday 17th May 2007
Cameron to Chillicothe. Took a quieter (old route 36) road, parallel to the busy one, which was a lot more pleasant. About 37 miles covered today.
Friday 18th May 2007
Nice temperature today, at 70 deg f, but easterly winds (where are these prevailing westerlies?). Started before 7am and took a phone break before midday at Brookfield. Finally arrived at Macon, having covered 60 miles.
Saturday 19th May 2007
Tired legs today, and concerned that Hannibal is a bit too far, after a long day yesterday. Rang from Clarence at around 11am and finished at Monroe city (42 miles). The wind was behind him for a change.
Sunday 20th May 2007
85 deg f today and another state boundary, crossing from Missouri to Illinois with the Mississippi river between them. The bridge over was actually the interstate 72 (with cycle lane thankfully) and then picked up the minor route 106 running just south of the motorway to Pittsfield. 56 miles in total.
